Why BTS Was Able to Return to the VMAs

BTS is back at the center of the global music conversation.

After a four-year break from full-group activities, the group has returned with ARIRANG, and its track “SWIM” has been nominated for both Song of the Year and Best K-Pop at the 2026 MTV Video Music Awards. The Song of the Year nomination is especially significant because it places BTS in one of the VMAs’ most prominent categories, alongside the biggest names in global pop.

Why BTS Was Able to Return to the VMAs

The first reason is the strength of BTS’s global influence.

For many artists, a long hiatus can weaken momentum. In BTS’s case, the opposite happened. Their individual activities kept each member visible, while the anticipation surrounding a full-group comeback continued to grow. Over the years, BTS built a global fan base large enough to turn their return into an international cultural event.

The second reason is that BTS has moved beyond being seen simply as a successful K-pop act.

Since becoming the first Korean artist to win at the VMAs in 2019, BTS has steadily expanded its position in the global mainstream. The fact that “SWIM” is nominated not only for Best K-Pop but also for Song of the Year shows how much that position has changed. BTS is no longer competing only within the boundaries of K-pop. They are being judged alongside major global pop artists.

Another key factor is BTS’s ability to combine music, performance and storytelling.

Their success has never depended on a single hit song. Albums, performances, personal narratives and broader themes have consistently been connected into a larger artistic identity. Even the title ARIRANG immediately creates curiosity about how BTS will connect Korean cultural identity with the global pop audience that has followed them for years.

Why This Year’s VMAs Could Be Especially Interesting

The 2026 VMA lineup also reflects how deeply K-pop has entered the American mainstream.

Alongside BTS, “Golden” from KPop Demon Hunters is also nominated for Song of the Year. BLACKPINK’s Lisa received four nominations, while CORTIS and KATSEYE are competing in multiple categories as well. K-pop is no longer appearing at the VMAs as a small international side category. It has become part of the broader structure of the show.

The presence of Madonna, who reportedly received 11 nominations including Artist of the Year and Video of the Year, adds another interesting dimension. The ceremony could bring together one of pop music’s most established icons and a generation of artists representing the increasingly global nature of the industry.

The Nomination May Matter as Much as the Trophy

Whether BTS actually wins Song of the Year will not be known until the ceremony on September 27. But the nomination itself already tells an important story.

There was a time when simply seeing a K-pop act nominated at a major American awards show was considered a major milestone. Now BTS is competing for one of the VMAs’ biggest awards while also being recognized in the K-pop category.

That shift says as much about the evolution of the global music industry as it does about BTS.

For that reason, the biggest question surrounding this year’s VMAs may not simply be how many trophies BTS takes home. It is whether their long-awaited return can prove that their position at the top of global pop culture remains intact.

BTS first made VMA history in 2019. Seven years later, they are returning not as newcomers representing the rise of K-pop, but as established global artists competing for one of the night’s biggest prizes.

The September 27 ceremony in Los Angeles could therefore become more than another awards show for BTS. It may serve as the first major stage of their next global chapter.
