K9: From Korean Artillery to U.S. Army Contender

A self-propelled howitzer originally developed to meet South Korea’s own security needs has now entered one of the most demanding defense markets in the world.
On August 18, 2026, the U.S. Army announced a contract with Hanwha Defense USA for the Mobile Tactical Cannon (MTC) prototype program. Under the agreement, Hanwha will deliver six initial prototypes, with an option for 12 additional systems, bringing the potential total to 18.
The immediate contract value is approximately $100 million, while the total potential value, including options, reaches about $263 million.
The numbers themselves are relatively modest compared with a full-scale procurement program. What makes the contract significant is that a K9-based artillery system will now move into actual U.S. Army operational testing.
For the K9, this marks another major step in a journey that began more than three decades ago.
From a Domestic Requirement to a National Artillery Program
The K9 program was not originally designed with exports in mind.
Its development began with South Korea’s need for a more capable artillery system able to respond to North Korea’s large concentration of artillery forces near the Demilitarized Zone.
During the 1970s and 1980s, the Republic of Korea Army operated systems such as the K55, based on the American M109 platform, while gradually building its own artillery design and production capabilities.
In 1989, South Korea launched the development of a new generation of domestically designed self-propelled artillery.
The objective was ambitious: combine a 155 mm/52-caliber gun with greater range, mobility, survivability and a modern digital fire-control system.
After nearly a decade of development, the K9 was declared suitable for combat in 1998 and entered South Korean military service in 1999.
The system offered a combination of long-range firepower, high road speed and the ability to quickly fire and relocate. This “shoot-and-scoot” capability became increasingly important as counter-battery radars, drones and precision weapons made stationary artillery more vulnerable.
Over time, the K9 became the backbone of South Korea’s self-propelled artillery force.
The Beginning of the K9’s Export Story
The K9’s international expansion began in the early 2000s.
Turkey became the first major foreign customer, using South Korean technology as the basis for its T-155 Fırtına self-propelled howitzer.
The platform’s global profile increased significantly during the following decade.
Poland selected the K9 platform in 2014, followed by Finland, India and Norway in 2017, Estonia in 2018, and later Australia, Egypt and Romania.
The expansion into Europe was particularly important.
Several NATO members now operate K9-family systems, providing the platform with a level of interoperability, maintenance experience and operational credibility that few non-Western artillery systems have achieved.
Poland's large-scale procurement further transformed the K9 from a South Korean export product into a major component of European artillery modernization.
The K9’s success has also been supported by repeat orders. Countries that already operate the system have continued purchasing additional units, indicating that the platform is becoming part of long-term force structures rather than remaining a one-time procurement.
This represents a broader shift.
The K9 is no longer simply a weapon system being exported from South Korea. It is increasingly becoming the center of an international artillery ecosystem involving production, maintenance, training and industrial cooperation.
From K9 to K9A1 and K9A2
Another reason behind the K9’s longevity has been continuous modernization.
The original K9 evolved into the K9A1, incorporating improvements in navigation, fire control and operational systems.
The next major step is the K9A2.
One of the most important features of the K9A2 is its automated ammunition-handling and loading system.
Earlier K9 variants rely on a semi-automatic loading process. The K9A2 is designed to automate the handling of both projectiles and propellant charges, increasing the rate of fire while reducing the number of crew members required to operate the system.
This development reflects a wider transformation in modern artillery warfare.
The war in Ukraine has demonstrated the growing importance of firing multiple rounds rapidly and immediately relocating before enemy counter-battery systems can respond.
Automation therefore improves more than firing speed. It can also increase survivability and reduce manpower requirements.
For Western militaries facing recruitment and personnel shortages, this is becoming an increasingly important consideration.
From Tracked to Wheeled: The K9MH
The K9 family is now moving beyond the traditional tracked self-propelled howitzer.
Hanwha has developed the K9 Mobile Howitzer, or K9MH, which combines technology derived from the K9 artillery system with an 8×8 wheeled chassis.
The concept incorporates a 155 mm/52-caliber gun and automated turret technology while adding the strategic mobility advantages of a wheeled vehicle.
Tracked artillery remains valuable because of its cross-country mobility, armor protection and ability to operate alongside mechanized forces.
Wheeled artillery, however, can offer advantages in long-distance road movement, logistics and operating costs.
The emergence of the K9MH therefore represents an important evolution in Hanwha’s strategy.
Instead of offering a single artillery platform, the company is developing a broader K9 artillery family, potentially including tracked howitzers, wheeled howitzers, automated ammunition systems and resupply vehicles.
This platform-based approach could extend the relevance of K9 technology for decades.
The Road to the United States
The K9’s entry into the U.S. market did not happen overnight.
Hanwha had already conducted demonstrations and compatibility testing with the U.S. military, including tests involving American 155 mm ammunition.
At the same time, the U.S. Army was reconsidering its broader artillery modernization strategy.
For years, the Army pursued the Extended Range Cannon Artillery, or ERCA, program, which was intended to dramatically increase the range of American self-propelled artillery.
However, technical challenges eventually forced the Army to reassess its approach.
Rather than relying exclusively on a completely new system developed from the ground up, the Army began evaluating mature artillery systems already available from U.S. and international manufacturers.
That shift created an opportunity for platforms such as the K9.
Several international defense companies participated in the Army’s evaluation effort, including teams offering systems such as CAESAR, RCH 155, Archer and SIGMA.
The selection of Hanwha Defense USA for the MTC prototype program therefore represents an important competitive milestone.
Under the contract, U.S. soldiers will test the systems in realistic operating conditions and evaluate their performance, reliability and supportability.
The results of those tests are expected to help inform future Army decisions on artillery deployment.
What the MTC Contract Means
1. The K9 Is Evolving from an Export Product into a Global Platform
The most important development in the K9 story is not simply the growing number of customers.
It is the transformation of the platform itself.
The original K9 was designed as a tracked self-propelled howitzer for the South Korean Army. It later developed into export variants, locally produced versions and upgraded models such as the K9A1 and K9A2.
Now the same technological foundation is being adapted to the wheeled K9MH.
This suggests that Hanwha is moving away from selling one finished product and toward building an artillery architecture based around common gun, turret, automation, ammunition-handling and fire-control technologies.
That kind of platform strategy can significantly extend the commercial and operational life of a weapons system.
2. Proven Technology Is Becoming a Major Competitive Advantage
The U.S. Army's artillery experience over the past decade highlights another important lesson.
Highly ambitious development programs can encounter technical delays, cost increases and integration problems.
As a result, militaries are increasingly interested in systems that combine advanced capabilities with proven operational maturity.
The K9 has more than two decades of operational history and a growing international customer base.
Its competitive advantage therefore does not rest on a single revolutionary technology.
Instead, it comes from a combination of operational maturity, established production capacity, continuous modernization and experience across multiple allied militaries.
For the U.S. Army, those characteristics may be increasingly valuable.
3. The Next Challenge Is Producing K9 Technology in America
Winning a prototype contract is only one part of competing in the U.S. defense market.
Long-term success will likely depend on how effectively Hanwha can integrate the program into the American industrial base.
For a large U.S. procurement program, local production, domestic suppliers, maintenance infrastructure and American jobs can be just as important as the technical performance of the weapon itself.
Hanwha has already been expanding its U.S. industrial presence, including plans related to K9 production and integration capabilities.
If the MTC program eventually moves toward large-scale procurement, the key question may shift from whether South Korea can export the K9 to whether Hanwha can build a sustainable U.S.-based K9 supply and support ecosystem.
That would represent a broader transformation in South Korea's defense export model — from simply “Made in Korea” toward systems developed through Korean technology but increasingly produced and supported together with allies.
4. U.S.–South Korea Defense Cooperation Could Expand Beyond Shipbuilding
Much of the recent discussion surrounding U.S.–South Korea defense-industrial cooperation has focused on shipbuilding, naval maintenance and maritime production capacity.
The MTC contract shows that cooperation could also expand significantly into land systems.
If the K9-based program progresses, opportunities could extend beyond the howitzer itself.
They could include 155 mm ammunition, propellant charges, automated ammunition resupply, maintenance, spare parts and digital logistics systems.
In this sense, the larger opportunity is not necessarily the sale of one artillery platform.
It is the creation of a more interconnected defense-industrial relationship between the United States and South Korea.
5. This Is Not Yet a U.S. Army K9 Procurement Program
At the same time, the significance of the contract should not be overstated.
The current agreement is a prototype and operational evaluation contract, not a full-scale production award.
The Army will first test the systems and gather operational data before deciding whether and how to proceed with future procurement.
Reports suggesting that a follow-on program could eventually involve hundreds of systems describe the potential scale of a future competition, not a confirmed purchase.
The distinction is important.
The K9 has entered the race, but it has not yet won the final procurement decision.
Even so, reaching this stage is significant in its own right.
A Korean artillery platform has moved beyond demonstrations and marketing and into a formal U.S. Army experimentation program that could influence the future structure of American artillery forces.
From a Korean Howitzer to an Allied Artillery Platform
When development began in 1989, the purpose of the K9 was straightforward: give the South Korean military a modern artillery system capable of responding to the security environment on the Korean Peninsula.
Few would have expected that the same technological lineage would eventually compete for a role in the future artillery structure of the U.S. Army.
Since entering service in 1999, the K9 has expanded from South Korea to Turkey, Europe, Asia, the Middle East and Australia.
It has evolved through the K9A1 and K9A2 and is now being adapted into new configurations such as the K9MH.
The 2026 U.S. Army MTC contract therefore represents another turning point in that history.
The question facing the K9 is no longer simply whether a South Korean weapon can succeed in overseas markets.
The new question is whether South Korean defense technology can become deeply integrated into the operational requirements, supply chains and industrial base of the United States and other allies.
If the MTC trials prove successful and eventually lead to a larger procurement program, the next chapter of the K9 story may no longer be about exporting a Korean howitzer.
It may be about transforming the K9 into a globally produced and jointly supported allied artillery platform.
