Dangun Wanggeom: The Legendary Founder of Korea

Dangun Wanggeom is the legendary founder of Gojoseon, the first Korean kingdom. According to Korean tradition, he established Gojoseon in 2333 BCE, making him one of the most important figures in Korean history and cultural identity. While historians generally regard Dangun as a legendary rather than historically verified figure, his story remains a cornerstone of Korea's national heritage.

The Legend of Dangun

The story, recorded in the 13th-century historical text Samguk Yusa (Memorabilia of the Three Kingdoms), begins with Hwanung, the son of the Lord of Heaven, who descended to Earth to govern humanity. He established a sacred city and taught people agriculture, medicine, law, and moral principles.

One day, a tiger and a bear prayed to Hwanung, asking to become human. He instructed them to remain inside a cave for 100 days, eating only mugwort and garlic while avoiding sunlight. The tiger abandoned the challenge, but the bear persevered and transformed into a woman named Ungnyeo. She later married Hwanung and gave birth to Dangun Wanggeom.

As an adult, Dangun founded Gojoseon, laying the foundation for what is traditionally regarded as the first Korean state. The legend symbolizes the birth of Korean civilization and the unity of heaven, nature, and humanity.

Historical Significance

Although there is no archaeological evidence confirming that a single kingdom was founded exactly in 2333 BCE, the Dangun legend has played a vital role in shaping Korean identity. Scholars generally interpret the story as a founding myth that reflects the emergence of early political communities rather than a literal historical record.

The Philosophy of Hongik Ingan

The Dangun tradition is closely associated with the ideal of Hongik Ingan meaning "To broadly benefit humanity." This principle emphasizes compassion, public service, and contributing to the common good. It continues to influence Korean education, culture, and national values today.

Every year on October 3, South Korea celebrates National Foundation Day (Gaecheonjeol), commemorating the legendary founding of Gojoseon by Dangun. The holiday honors Korea's cultural origins and the enduring significance of its founding myth.
